More about the Mifflin Guard

The individual units of the Mifflin Guard meet every year to vote on a schedule of events, new membership, and changes to the charter. Check out our active schedule. The Mifflin Guard charter is uncomplicated and protects each member unit's independence. Nonetheless, it is required that all Mifflin Guard units drill and operate in the field as a battalion at Mifflin Guard events. This calls for proficiency in both company and battalion drill. Our Colonel, Scott Washburn, is an excellent instructor and leader, well known for his knowledge of American Civil War drill. Scott has recently organized a Mifflin Guard Drill Team, the Third Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery.

Though we pride ourselves on our accomplished drilling, comradeship, and fierce military spirit, the Mifflin Guard is a family-friendly organization. Our Civilians are a growing, diverse group, with a lively camp life and a variety of activities going on at most major events.

Events the Mifflin Guard will attend include public battle reenactments (large and small), tacticals (usually private, "unscripted" battles), living histories, ceremonies, parades and dedications, and finally, lectures, dinners, and dances. We enjoy a great balance of education, public service, and fun. Checked our schedule yet?

The Mifflin Guard has a serious and ongoing commitment to historic preservation. The individual units work extremely hard in their respective local areas to preserve and protect our valuable historical resources. Fort Mifflin, located near the Philadelphia International Airport, is an visible example of the effort put forth by the Mifflin Guard. Mifflin Guard volunteers have put many hours into restoring and revitalizing the historic fort. Other endeavors include work at the Gettysburg battlefield, Fort Delaware, the Wilmington Historical Society, the GAR Museum in Philadelphia, Civil War cemeteries, and many of the APCWS efforts. Besides historic preservation, many Mifflin Guard members frequently volunteer for public service projects in their own communities.
